Hello from the Saskatchewan Weavers and Spinners Executive! You will notice a long overdue revision of information on this website. First of all, Emelie Hunt needs a big thank you for all her hard work in getting the original website operational. We now have a new Webmaster, Mena Ryan, who is updating and revising information for the SWS. Welcome and thank you, Mena! We welcome new members and hope you will consider joining this provincial weaving, spinning and fiber arts group. Our guilds in Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Craik and Regina all share in the operations of SWS and each guild takes a turn in overseeing memberships and planning a conference/retreat. This round is Saskatoon’s turn and we have a good start in planning the next conference. When? April 17-19, 2020 Where? Queen’s House of Retreats in Saskatoon. Location is 601 Taylor St. W. It is on the riverbank and has lovely grounds for a walk. Our Retreat is called “Celebrating Indigenous Roots” and will focus on Metis and First Nation textiles. Audrey Dreaver, a First Nations Artist will speak about historical Indigenous textiles and the Gabriel Dumont Institute staff will guide a tour of their impressive collection of Metis artefacts. There will be workshops on beading by a First Nations artist and fingerweaving with a Gabriel Dumont staff member. Another planned workshop is on dyeing with silk ties …not Indigenous themed but very fun and easy. Another workshop on creative spinning is also planned. We are in the process of developing a brochure but here is a brief summary of events
Silent auction-donated fiber, book and equipment or other treasures –all proceeds go to SWS
Baby Blanket Challenge-these will be donated to Ronald McDonald House or Crisis Nursery
”Show and Tell” –we will have several scheduled times for each guild on non-guild person and each guild can have a designated area to display work.
An area for visiting, spinning and a vendor area
Tea Towel Exchange
These events are great socializing and inspiring experiences. We encourage you to register; overall fees are yet to be set but will be in the range of $250. Consider joining the Saskatchewan Weavers and Spinners group-we offer scholarships up to $400.00 for members and plan activities for non-retreat years. We are an enthusiastic, talented and supportive group of fiber focused artists and would be happy to welcome you as a new member. The fees are $35.00 for two years. Feel free to email me if you have any questions. email@example.com Looking forward to see you! Shelley
